Astou Ndour (MVP y mejor pívot del campeonato) y Yurena Díaz (que termina su ciclo con las selecciones nacionales de base de forma victoriosa) han conseguido proclamarse campeonas de Europa  U20 en Turquía en un campeonato inmaculado con 9 victorias y en la gran final contra Italia Astou Ndour ha sido la mejor reboteadora con 17 rechaces y Yurena Díaz la máxima encestadora de la final con 16 puntos.

La selección española U20 femenina se proclamó campeona de Europa de su categoría tras derrotar a Italia en un partido épico, con un tercer cuarto memorable de las de Anna Caula. España suma el tercer entorchado consecutivo.

UN COMIENZO POCO HALAGÜEÑO (11-18) 11-18

Comenzó trabada España en los primeros compases de la final. Las transalpinas aprovecharon para coger una pequeña ventaja con un 0-8 de parcial de la mano de las gemelas Dotto y Formica. Ante esta situación, Anna Caula paró el partido para reordenar al equipo nacional, y Astou Ndour anotó la primera canasta de España. Desde ese momento, España comenzó a sumar y a encontrarse en el choque. La defensa española comenzaba a asediar al conjunto transalpino, que no anotaba con la facilidad del inicio. El ritmo de juego se había igualado y Elena de Alfredo dirigía al equipo de manera magistral. No obstante, Francesca Dotto dejaba destellos de calidad con sus triples. Al final del primer cuarto, Italia había cogido ventaja de siete puntos (11-18).

ESPAÑA, POCO A POCO SUMA (14-10) 25-28

Astou Ndour comenzó anotando en el segundo cuarto. Italia parecía que se encontraba con buenas sensaciones en la pista, aunque su acierto cara al aro no le permitía abrir más ventajas. Esto hizo que España recortara diferencias y se pusiera a tres puntos (17-20, m.14). Sin embargo, otra vez la genialidad de Caterina Dotto volvió a poner con más ventaja a las transalpinas. España mantuvo  la calma, y en los últimos minutos consiguió reducir la distancia con Italia. Un 2+1 de Astou Ndour dejaba a España a tres puntos a falta de 18 segundos, 25-28. A base de defensa, ese resultado se mantuvo al descanso tras un periodo que dejaba buenas sensaciones en el bloque español.

DEFENSA PARA ANIQUILAR A ITALIA (20-3) 45-31

Esas sensaciones se prolongaron después del descanso. España realizó una gran defensa sobre la selección italiana, y Yurena Díaz igualó el encuentro con un triple. A partir de ahí comenzó un encuentro nuevo para la selección, que tras unos minutos en los que no consiguió anotar, Inma Zanoguera sumó un 2+1 que destapó el tarro de las esencias. Un parcial de 12-0 obligó al combinado transalpino a pedir tiempo muerto a falta de dos minutos para el final del periodo (37-28, m.28). Sólo Caterina Dotto rompió la mala racha de anotación a poco más de un minuto para el final. Pero España seguía sumando, y terminó el cuarto con un gran marcador, 45-31, después de un triple de Paula Estebas.

SIN SUFRIMIENTO NO HAY VICTORIA (14-22) 59-53

Con 14 puntos de ventaja, España comenzó el último cuarto. Y Yurena Díaz continuó con su festival anotador. La jugadora del Gran Canaria 2014 fue determinante. Junto a Paula Estebas, que cuajó el mejor partido del torneo, la selección española continuaba aumentando las diferencias en el marcador, e Italia continuaba sin encontrarse. Astou Ndour continuaba capturando rebotes, y terminó alcanzando la cifra de 17 rechaces. Toda una exhibición. Italia conseguía ver aro, pero su reacción llegaba ya demasiado tarde. A poco más de un minuto para el final, las transalpinas se acercaron a 11 puntos. Pero Anna Caula ordenó las ideas de la selección e hizo que España asegurara la victoria y el Campeonato de Europa.

SPAIN CLAIM GOLD

Turning Point: After trailing for the entire first half, Spain held Italy to no points for more than eight minutes to start the second half, subsequently tracing their path to victory.

Game Hero: In the key third quarter, Itziar Llobet sunk two three-pointers in a span of 90 seconds during Spain's 20-3 spurt that lifted them to 45-31 lead.

Stats Don't Lie: Spain's ferocious defence did not allow Italy many open looks in the third quarter, holding them to 0-for-16 in field-goal shooting.

Spain claimed their third consecutive gold medal at the U20 European Championship Women, defeating Italy 59-53 in a highly entertaining title game on Sunday night in Samsun.

To get the unprecedented three-peat, Spain had to recover after a slow start that had them down by eight points in the early going, and trailing at halftime for only the second time in the entire tournament.

But they stepped up on defence after the break, leaving Italy scoreless for more than eight minutes at the start of the third quarter, and leaving their opponents without a single second-half field goal until a minute-and-a-half had already passed in the fourth quarter.

It helped Spain build an insurmountable 57-38 lead, and they comfortably closed out the title game.

Doing what they do best - play defence and run the fast break - Italy opened the title game with an 8-0 lead.

After a timeout, Spain settled in. Astou Ndour put Spain on the scoreboard, and Paula Estebas nailed a triple as they scored seven unanswered points. But Italy remained in front with consecutive triples fromFrancesca Dotto and Ilaria Milazzo, to hold an 18-11 lead after 10 minutes.

Italy forced nine turnovers in the first quarter, and there was no drop-off in the intensity of their defence in the second either.

Spain took better care of the ball, however, and closed the gap as Elena De Alfredo connected on a jumper and Yurena Diaz sunk a triple.

They also hoped zone defence would disrupt the rhythm of the Italians, but Caterina Dotto and Elisa Penna kept Italy's lead at seven points, before Ndour made a basket-plus-free throw, cutting it to 28-25 at halftime.

The beginning of the second half was almost a copy of the first, but with roles reversed. Diaz hit a triple to tie the score at 28, but that was the only basket in the first five minutes of the third stanza.

What happened next was Spain's run for gold.

An "And-1" from Inmaculada Zanoguera got the Spanish going, before a driving layup from Diaz and a triple from Itziar Llobet gave them a 37-28 advantage.

Italy could not finish their fast breaks, and began missing their free throws. Another triple from Llobet, and one from Estebas just before the buzzer, put Spain up 45-31 going into the fourth quarter.

Formica finally snapped Italy's 11-minute field goal drought a minute into the fourth quarter, but another triple from Estebas made it 50-33. The lead soon reached 19 points, before Italy closed the gap in the final minutes.

Diaz led Spain with 16 points, Estebas finished with 10 points and eight rebounds, and Llobet also scored 10. The tournament MVP Ndour grabbed 17 rebounds, but scored all of her seven points in the first half.

Francesca Dotto led Italy with 14 points, while Caterina Dotto and Penna had 10 apiece. Alessandra Formica had eight points and 10 rebounds in defeat.
