Astou Ndour lidera a España a la final (57-51)

La selección española jugará la final del Europeo tras derrotar a Turquía en un ajustadísimo partido. Las otomanas tuvieron ventaja en el segundo cuarto, pero a base de defensa y una gran Ndour (24 puntos y 19 rebotes), España jugará la cuarta final consecutiva del Europeo U20.

DURO DESDE EL INICIO (16-12) 16-12

Que España tendría que sudar para conseguir el pase a la final se vio desde el primer minuto. Con un ambiente claramente hostil y con el público volcado a favor de la selección otomana, ambas selecciones comenzaron el encuentro con dificultades para anotar, aunque fue España quien abrió la lata. A partir de ahí, ambos equipos mantuvieron un ritmo igualado de juego en el que ninguno tuvo el dominio completo del partido. No obstante, España se fue al final del primer cuarto con ventaja, tras una canasta de Yurena Díaz, 16-12.

TURQUÍA PONE LA DIRECTA (10-18) 26-30

Pero en el segundo cuarto la película del encuentro cambiaria radicalmente. Turquía comenzaría a engrasar la maquinaria para que Aydin y Bilgic comenzaran a sumar puntos desde todas las posiciones. De esta forma, y unida a una defensa en zona que supieron combinar con defensas en dos contra uno, las otomanas firmaron un parcial de 0-8 que desubicó a España. No obstante, Astou Ndour apareció en el momento más indicado para rescatar a España y comenzar a reducir diferencias. Así, España se fue al descanso perdiendo por tan solo cuatro puntos, 26-30.

ESPAÑA COMIENZA A TENER SENSACIONES (12-8) 38-38

Tras el descasno, comenzó a verse a la España que había maravillado en los últimos partidos. Zanoguera comenzó a sumar puntos, y el equipo español comenzaba a poner las cosas difíciles a las otomanas en defensa. No obstante, Turquía seguía con opciones gracias a su estrella, Olçay Cakir, que no dejaba ni un centímetro al equipo español. Por su parte, Paula Estebas continuaba sumando en defensa y en ataque, y al final del tercer cuarto, el empate a 38 dejaba el partido abierto a cualquier opción. 

UN FINAL ÉPICO… Y A LA FINAL (19-13) 57-51

España tenía buenas sensaciones en el último cuarto, y eso lo demostró Elena de Alfredo abriendo el periodo con un triple. Pero las otomanas seguían al acecho, y Ayse Cora volvió a liderar a Turquía en este periodo. La dureza física fue castigada por los colegiados, que señalaron antideportivas al equipo otomano, y España supo sacar rédito de esta situación. Poco a poco la ventaja fue aumentando, y una imperial Astou Ndour (24 puntos y 19 rebotes) se echó a España a la espalda para llevarla a la gran final del Europeo, que disputará mañana ante Italia. Turquía intentaba frenar el partido con tiempos muertos en la recta final

Turning Point: In a tense game where every possession seemed of utmost importance, it was a baseline jumper from Inmaculada Zanoguera with three-and-a-half minutes to go that took the wind out of Turkey's sails. It made it a five-point game, and Spain's defence did the rest.

Stats Don't Lie: Spain took full control of the boards in the second half. After the break they held a 27-15 rebounding advantage, including a 9-2 margin on the offensive glass.

Two-time defending champions Spain have moved on to another title game at the U20 European Championship Women, after topping host nation Turkey 57-51 in a hard-fought encounter on Saturday night.

Unbeaten Spain will play against Italy in Sunday's gold medal game, as they gun for their third consecutive title. Meanwhile, Turkey will face Belarus in the battle for bronze.

Both teams opened the game with great intensity, but Spain had a little better start and led 16-12 after the first quarter.

However, it was the hosts who were the first to pull away.

Carried by the chants of the faithful fans, point guards Olcay Cakir and Merve Aydin led the charge, and forward Elif Emirtekin sunk a triple, pushing Turkey ahead 28-20 midway through the second quarter.

Spain recovered, again through Ndour, who sunk a triple to end the half, cutting the deficit to 30-26, and they regained the lead immediately after the break with baskets inside from Ndour and Yurena Diaz.

As the tense battle continued, and pressure mounted, no shots were wasted. However, Spain's defence allowed only one field goal in the last eight minutes of the third quarter, but Turkey matched that defensive aggressiveness at the other end, and the teams were all tied at 38 going into the final 10 minutes.

Elena De Alfredo opened the final quarter with a triple, and Spain's defence kept them in front. Turkey ended their field goal drought with driving layups from Ayse Cora and Cakir, but poor free-throw shooting prevented the hosts from reclaiming the lead.

A baseline jumper from Inmaculada Zanoguera gave Spain a 49-44 advantage, forcing Turkey to call a timeout. However, Spain got two more takeaways and forced the hosts into taking tough shots.

Ndour's free throws then put Spain up 51-44 with a little over minute-and-a-half to go, and they held on without further drama.

Diaz, Paula Estebas and Sara Rodriguez contributed in victory with seven points apiece. Cakir scored 16 for Turkey, and Aydin added 11 in defeat.
